Types of Cattle

There are different types of Cattle. Some of them are:

Angus

The Angus breed was developed in Scotland. They are a medium-sized breed. The Angus is Black and polled.

I will know tell you some history about the Angus breed. George Grant transported 4 Angus bulls from Scotland to the middle of Kansas prairie in1873, They were part of the scotman's dream to start a colony of wealthy, stock-raising Britishers. George died 5 yrs after the transportation.

When 2 of George's bulls were exhibited in the fall of 1873 at the Kansas City Livestock expostition, some considered them 'freaks' because their polled (Hornless) heads and solid black colour. George crossed the bulls with the native Texas Longhorn cows, producing a large number of hornless black calves that survived well on the winter range. The Angus crosses wintered better and weighed more the next spring.

Hereford

This breed developed in the country of Herefordshire in England. They are a medium-sized breed, rich red colour with a white face, throat, legs and tail, and a white long stripe along the back of the neck. They are horned and polled.

Hereford cattle arenative to England. They originated in the country of Hereford, which lies in the fertile valley between the Severn river and the Eastern boundary of Wales. The first breeding herd of Herefords to play an important part in establishing the breed in the U.S.A was that William H. Sotham and Eratus Corning of Albany, New York, in 1840.

Their red-coloured bodies and white faces easily distinguish Hereford cattle. In form Hereford cattle are muscular, moderate to long in length of side, adequate in length of leg, large in size, trim and smooth. They are well developed in the regions of valuable cuts-The back, loin, and hindquarters. The Hereford breed is well known for it's vigour and foraging ability.

The Hereford breed is also polled. In 1900 Warren Gammon of Iowa wrote to nearly Hereford breeder in the U.S.A and asked if they didn't want any horned cattle. He succeeded in securing 13 head of purebred Hereford that were polled. This Breed has become very popular among breeders who desire the Hereford form but dislike the horns.

Belgian-Blue

These cattle originated in central and upper Belgium and they, at one time, accounted for nearly half of the cattle in the normal herd. A true breeding policy was established in the early 20th century when the breed was established. At one stage the breed was divided into 2 strains, 1 primarily was used for milk production and the other was used for beef production. It's now mainly used as a beef animal.

The Belgian Blue is a large-sized animal with a rounded outline and prominent muscles. The shoulder, back, loin and rump are heavily muscled. The back is straight, rump is sloping, tail set is prominent and the skin is fine. It has fine but strong legs and can walk easily. The colour can be white, blue roan or sometimes black. The breed is known for it's quiet temperament.

The Belgian Blue breed cattle is relatively new to the U.S.A but is rapidly gaining acceptance with beef and dairy breeders. In the late 50's, a debate arose among the breeders, the question being whether to maintain the dual-purpose type as it was or to select for more muscling.
